Strom Thurmond High School's Educational Psychology instructor, Amy Hardy, and her cadets toured Daufuskie Island after reading Pat Conroy's memoir, The Water is Wide. While reading the book, the cadets became very interested in the disparity in educational opportunities for the various counties across the state. Pat Conroy, who taught at the island's school in 1969, wrote about his experiences teaching children of extreme poverty who were grossly neglected by the educational system. #TeacherCadet
