Teaching Fellows Program Expanded to Three Additional Institutions Three South Carolina Institutions Announced as New CERRA Teaching Fellows Institutions South Carolina – September 9, 2024 – The Center for Educator Recruitment, Retention, and Advancement (CERRA) is proud to announce the addition of Columbia College, Newberry College, and North Greenville University as Teaching Fellows institutions. These institutions join the prestigious list of South Carolina colleges and universities committed to nurturing the next generation of educators through the SC Teaching Fellows Program.
Columbia College and Newberry College will offer the first-ever combined institution program, meaning that while students can attend either college, all Teaching Fellows events will be conducted collaboratively. According to Dr. Jenna Hallman, Executive Director at CERRA, “We hope Columbia College and Newberry College will create the model for other small institutions to partner and potentially join the Teaching Fellows Program.”
The CERRA Teaching Fellows Program offers high school seniors a pathway into the teaching profession by providing ongoing support to help them grow into effective educators. Teaching Fellows receive up to $6,000 annually for four years to help with their tuition. In addition to financial assistance, participating institutions provide Fellows with professional development opportunities, mentoring, and practical classroom experience above what is offered through the teacher preparation program.
Upon graduation, Teaching Fellows are required to teach in a South Carolina public school for a minimum of one year for every year they receive the fellowship funding. This program helps address the teacher shortage in the state and ensures that South Carolina students are taught by some of the brightest and most dedicated educators.
North Greenville University, Columbia College, and Newberry College will spend the 2024-2025 academic year building their Teaching Fellows programs, developing curriculum, and establishing partnerships with local school districts to provide Fellows with teaching experiences. The first cohort of Fellows at these institutions will begin in the Fall of 2025. High school seniors interested in becoming Teaching Fellows at these new institutions can apply during this year’s application cycle, which is open from October 1 to December 1. The selection process is highly competitive, and students are encouraged to demonstrate a passion for education and a commitment to making a difference in the lives of South Carolina’s children.
