The CofC Teaching Fellows had a busy week and would like to share a few of their activities. College Day What an amazing day! 62 high schoolers and one fabulous Teaching Fellow group doing amazing things and promoting CofC and our program. I am so proud, and Will Roebuck knocked it out of the park with the planning, organizing and execution of the day. He really earned that Baby Clyde! Whoot whoot!!! Well done one and all! Impromptu Painting Night Some super creative Fellows showed up to paint in the Lounge on Tuesday. They blew off some steam, and had a blast making artwork and sharing a laugh or two. Great time was had by all. Stay tuned for another impromptu creative night. Freshmen Scavenger Hunt The Freshmen had a super great day in class where they finished the book Culturally Responsive Teaching and the Brain by Zaretta Hammond. Then they completed an amazing scavenger hunt across campus in through Charleston. By: Dr. Tim Lintner, Campus Director Sabotage. Revenge. Betrayal. All forms of intrigue were on hand as the USC Aiken Freshmen Teaching Fellows donned their sleuth hats and tackled Escapology in Columbia. In one room, six Fellows had to figure out who was responsible for the untimely death of a well-heeled patriarch. In another room, a group of five Fellows (and the hapless USC Aiken Teaching Fellow Director) needed to find the missing air canisters enabling their disabled WWII submarine to surface for air. Problem-solving, teamwork, and leadership skills were all on hand as the Fellows solved (without any clues) the Murder in the Mansion. Due to the utter uselessness of the TF Director, the other group was just minutes away from cracking the code and breathing the crisp, welcomed ocean air. Regardless of outcomes, a good time was had by all.

The College of Charleston recently welcomed the incoming cohort of Teaching Fellows with a few special events. The freshmen met their sophomore mentors at an ice cream social. Dr. Hunter-Doniger reported that this was a wonderful event, and the freshmen are looking forward to meeting their "extended Teaching Fellows families." The extended families include the current juniors who served as mentors to the current sophomores when they were freshmen, etc. The freshmen cohort also participated in a Gullah tour and attended a Riverdogs baseball game. Several Teaching Fellows were even featured on the jumbotron! By: Charli Watts, Class of 2022, CCU Teaching Fellow
The CCU Teaching Fellows are very excited to welcome their 15 freshman fellows. In hopes of building great connections and friendships with one another, each cohort of CCU Teaching Fellows hosted an event for the 2021 cohort. The events included a Welcome Reception with parents on Saturday, a Welcome Reception with all Fellows on Sunday, Movie Monday with the Senior cohort, Tuesday Tour Talks with mentor/mentees, Water paint Wednesday with the Junior cohort, Tie-Dye Thursday with the Sophomore cohort, a fun afternoon at the trampoline park on Friday, and to finish the week, Sun Saturday at the beach for a picnic! New Fellows and a new tradition! The USC Aiken Teaching Fellows welcomed 11 Freshmen by hosting the inaugural Teaching Fellows Induction Ceremony. Each incoming Fellow was given a memento – a tangible symbol of significance or wisdom – by the sophomore, junior and senior Fellows. Each Fellow presented their memento to the Freshmen cohort and stated the significance behind it. The Freshmen Fellows left with 26 mementos, each a permanent reminder of what it means to be an teacher-leader and a Teaching Fellow at USC Aiken. It was a moving, heartfelt and truly inspirational experience for all our Fellows. By: Dr. Jenna Hallman, Teaching Fellows Program Director Over the last two Saturdays, the CERRA Teaching Fellows staff and the Campus Directors had the pleasure of welcoming the 2021 cohort of students to the Program! Fellows who will attend CSU, CCU, CofC, FMU, UofSC Aiken, and UofSC Columbia met on June 19th, while Fellows who attend AU, CU, LU, UofSC Upstate, and WU met on June 26th. The in-person orientation included:
Highlights for students were opportunities to hear from the 2021-22 SC Teacher of the Year, Mrs. Amy Carter, and meet their Campus Director and other cohort members. By: Rebecca Gaura, Sophomore, Publicity Chair Anderson University freshman Teaching Fellows were delighted to have Mrs. Sarah Gams, the South Carolina Teacher of the Year, as well as Mr. Todd Scholl, mindfulness advocate, visit on March 15, 2021, to assist and lead in our bi-annual professional development session. Teaching Fellows set aside the afternoon to bond with their cohort, as well as to grow as individuals and future educators. Mrs. Gams, former English teacher at Spring Hill High School (and a fantastic one, as well!), presented on the importance of Social-Emotional Learning. Connecting to your students as people, not just learners, and ensuring they all are aware of their potential for success are crucial for creating an inclusive and encouraging classroom environment. Mr. Scholl presented on the importance of making time for rest and to de-stress as a busy teacher in order to address the needs of all students. He taught us some techniques such as breathing exercises and being aware of how our actions can affect others. The freshman cohort is incredibly thankful for the professional development and time to join together. |
