About Teacher Expo
The purpose of Expo is to help South Carolina school districts and teacher applicants make contact that will hopefully result in employment offers. In many ways the employment process can be compared to the marriage process. Just as you attend various social functions that sometimes result in meeting new people that lead to dates, Expo is an opportunity for you to make contact with school districts for interviews.
Although it may be “love at first sight” for some of you, it is much more likely that you will begin a “courtship” that will entail more than one interview, a visit to the district, and a background check. Districts will want to interview a number of candidates for their positions and will need to consider other applicants already on file, as well. In addition, you are likely to want to review the possibilities in other districts before accepting the first offer. Therefore, the “engagement” probably won’t come until both of you have had a chance to know each other.
Another point to remember is that the employment relationship is a serious one, and few districts allow for “arranged marriages.” Therefore, they will involve principals and other officials in the decision to make a proposal. And because not all the officials who are involved in hiring for vacant positions can be present at Expo, for most districts the purpose of Expo is to find you, not necessarily “elope.”
Similarly, if districts do not have immediate openings for your area of certification, they attend Expo to identify good prospects for when they do have vacancies. Many districts will be hiring through the beginning of the school year, and they are just as eager as you are to make a good match when the time is right.
With that said we hope you enjoy the Expo!
