Facts and Figures

  • The program was piloted in four high schools in 1985 - 1986 and quickly grew to 28 schools in its second year, all of which still offer the Teacher Cadet Program
  • In 2008 - 2009, 166 South Carolina high schools offered 188 sections of the course
  • In 2008 - 2009, 2,517 students in South Carolina participated in the program -- 521 students were males and 826 were students of color
  • More than 45,000 students have participated in the program in its 24 year history
  • 4,043 former Teacher Cadets were employed in a South Carolina public school in 2008 - 2009 
  • Nearly one out of every five students who have participated in the Teacher Cadet Program has gone on to earn South Carolina teacher certification
