CERRA to train 151 teachers during statewide tour

ROCK HILL—More than 150 South Carolina teachers will go back to school to learn more about leading the Teacher Cadet Program, the nation’s oldest and most established teacher recruitment model operated by the Center for Educator Recruitment, Retention, & Advancement (CERRA).

The training workshops will be conducted over five days in five cities across the state and will be led by veteran Teacher Cadet instructors Angi Brush of Ashley Ridge High School, Betsy Wilson of Wando High School, Anne Ledford of Fort Mill High School, and Lynn Wilson of Seneca High School. Marcella Wine-Snyder and Mychal Frost, both of CERRA, will also present during the training tour to update teachers who will be using the newly redesigned 10th edition of Experiencing Education, the curriculum developed by CERRA exclusively for the Teacher Cadet Program. Sessions will be conducted in Columbia (Thursday, July 22), Florence (Friday, July 23), Charleston (Monday, July 26), Anderson (Tuesday, July 27), and Aiken (Thursday, July 29).

The curriculum, first written in 1986, has received attention in advance of its release next week. In February, the Future Educators Association adopted the program’s 44 standards as its national standards. Over the past two years, a team of 11 South Carolina educators have thoroughly revised and updated the curriculum, enhancing many of the lessons, activities, and much of the content to make it more relevant to education today.

A website, teachercadets.com, is also being developed and is expected to launch in August. The website will provide equitable access to information and resources for Teacher Cadet instructors and students. Site visitors can expect to find educational strategies, best practices, demonstration lessons, “how to” educational videos, current education research and trends, and technology mediums that will facilitate communication and collaboration among students and teachers across the country.

The Experiencing Education, 10th edition curriculum focuses on four themes: Experiencing Learning, Experiencing the Profession, Experiencing the Classroom, and Experiencing Education. The 44 rigorous standards that were written based upon the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) standards have been aligned with standards set forth by the following organizations: Association of Teacher Educators (ATE), Interstate New Teacher Assessment and Support Consortium (INTASC), and National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS).
