State Teacher Forum to Host Candidate Debate Thursday in North Myrtle Beach
Hour-long event will be streamed online live by WBTW News 13

ROCK HILL— Candidates vying for the state’s top education post will gather Thursday, February 18, in North Myrtle Beach to address the South Carolina State Teacher Forum as part of the group’s annual professional development conference.

The hour-long event will be moderated by WBTW News 13 anchor Nicole Boone. The award-winning journalist anchors the noon, 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. broadcasts for the CBS affiliate covering the Pee Dee and Grand Strand.

The station’s Web site will provide a live video stream of the debate in its entirety.  At approximately 1 p.m. Thursday a link will become available in the breaking news section of www.scnow.com to allow site visitors to watch the debate online. Due to limited space at Baywatch Resort and Conference Center, only educators participating in the State Teacher Forum and media representatives will be allowed to attend the debate in person.

Candidates for South Carolina’s next Superintendent of Education participating in the debate are: Gary Burgess (R-Pendleton); Frank Holleman (D-Greenville); Elizabeth Moffly (R-Awendaw); Kelly Payne (R-Irmo); and Mick Zais (R-Newberry).

The State Teacher Forum is a program operated by the Center for Educator Recruitment, Retention, and Advancement (CERRA), an independent and non-partisan state agency located on the campus of Winthrop University.  District-level teachers of the year from state’s 85 school districts and special schools comprise the State Teacher Forum. The group is led by 2010 South Carolina Teacher of the Year Bryan Coburn, who is a pre-engineering, computer programming, and business teacher from Northwestern High School in Rock Hill.

If you are not able to watch the debate live, a recorded broadcast will be available from CERRA beginning Monday, February 22 at www.cerra.org/edvote2010.

For more information about each candidate, listen to podcasts recorded by CERRA at www.cerra.org/podcast. The organization has met or is planning to meet with each campaign in effort to inform the candidates about the center’s efforts in attracting, recruiting, and retaining the highest-quality teachers to South Carolina.
