SC NBC Loan Program Score Release FAQs
National Board Certification Candidates who have not achieved
Is there money available to cover the cost of retake entries?
National Board has not released any Federal Subsidy money for retake candidates at this time.
CERRA is not aware of any available funding.
What should teachers do if they did not certify within 3 years?
CERRA DOES NOT have payment plans for repayment and invoices are not sent to candidates. 2009-2010 loan candidates must submit repayment with a money order or certified check, made payable to the SC State Department of Education. Repayment is due at CERRA by June 1, 2013. Personal checks, debit or credit cards are not accepted. Funds cannot be withheld from paychecks by the State. For any candidate who does not know about amount owed, please send written request for information to Katie Gibson via email. Please refer to your signed loan agreement regarding repayment.
Not certified in three years
If a candidate submits the required portfolio (complete and scorable) but does not become National Board Certified in the three-year period allotted for completing the process as set forth in these attached State guidelines, he/she must repay the State of South Carolina for the second half of the loan (up to $1,250) plus interest. This loan repayment will be due no later than six months after the official release of NBC scores.
Separation from Teaching in South Carolina
Loan recipients not achieving certification who resign, retire, or otherwise separate from the education field in South Carolina during the three-year period of the loan will be disqualified from loan forgiveness of any outstanding principal balance and interest. The candidate must repay the amount due to the State of South Carolina within six months of the resignation, retirement, or other separation from service.
Newly Certified NBCTS
Do newly certified NBCT need to send any paperwork to CERRA?
Newly certified NBCTs do not have to submit a copy of their congratulatory letter or score report to CERRA UNLESS they moved into South Carolina during their candidacy (in which they will need to submit a copy of their score report and contact information to the CERRA address via US mail). Otherwise, National Board will provide CERRA with a list.
When will newly certified NBCTs receive their “loan satisfied” paperwork?
Because CERRA must confirm with the SDE-Office of Finance that newly certified NBCTs were teaching in a SC public classroom at the time of certification, it could be early Spring 2013 before 2012 NBCTs receive this loan satisfied paperwork from CERRA.
