CERRA-South Carolina is pleased to announce that the South Carolina General Assembly has passed legislation supporting funding for National Board Certification ® by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards ® (NBPTS) for South Carolina teachers for 2007-2008. This funding will support candidates in the 2007 and 2008 National Board for Professional Teaching Standards cycles. This proviso empowers CERRA-South Carolina to administer the SC NBC Loan Program which provides up to $2,500 (the assessment fee cost) to qualifying classroom teachers and provides a salary supplement for those who achieve National Board Certification and meet the specific guidelines established by the State Board of Education. This funding is provided through a "forgivable" loan which allows teachers to borrow the amount needed to pursue National Board Certification and the fee will be paid directly to NBPTS. As long as the teacher becomes a National Board Certified Teacher® within three years of application, the entire loan amount is forgiven. And, because our policymakers believe in the rigor of this advanced professional development and certification process, the guidelines permit cancellation of half of the loan amount if a candidate submits all ten scoreable entries to NBPTS in year one of candidacy.
If the candidate does not become certified within the three-year period, he/she is responsible for repaying up to the full loan amount to the State of South Carolina. Teachers who are interested in this process are encouraged to READ all of the information provided on the SC NBC Loan Application and ask questions before they commit themselves to this obligation to NBPTS and the State of South Carolina. It is very important that all teachers fully understand the serious commitment they are making to this process and to the loan program before they commit themselves personally, professionally, and financially.

The Spring 2008 National Board Loan Application is printed in green. To apply, you must submit the current version of the application. Any application submitted not printed in the 2008 green color will be returned and will need to be resubmitted with the current application.
