SOUTH CAROLINA TEACHER SALARIES: 2007-2008

Teacher salaries in South Carolina are based on a minimum salary schedule established by the state annually. School districts must pay the minimum salary mandated by the state using two criteria: (1) years of experience and (2) education. Education is divided into five categories: bachelor's degree; bachelor's degree and 18 hours; master's degree; master's degree and 30 hours; and doctor's degree.

The figures shown here are the minimum salaries at various points on the salary schedule for the 2007-2008school year. Most districts will pay more than these minimums. For details, call the district in question. These estimates are based on 190-day teaching contracts. (Please keep in mind that the cost of living in South Carolina is lower than the national average.)

The FY2008 average South Carolina teacher salary was $44,336. The national average classroom teacher salary for 2006-2007 is estimated to be $50,816 (NEA Research, December 2007). Most school districts pay a beginning teacher (Bachelor's degree and 0 years experience) a higher salary than required by the 2007-2008 State Minimum Salary Schedule.
